Geography

At the heart of the Geography curriculum is developing a high-quality education that inspires pupil’s curiosity, fascination about the world, its people and provides a rounded knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live.

Overview

Students focus on: broadening their knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments; and growing a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.  Students also learn geographical knowledge, understanding and skills, and conduct fieldwork in contrasting locations to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from geographical data.

The KS3 programme consolidates and extends students’ knowledge of the world’s major countries and their physical and human features. The curriculum builds on the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum programme of study for Geography, teaching students:

  • To think about their place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and the sustainability of the planet.
  • How places and landscapes are formed, how people and environment interact and how a diverse range of economies and societies are interconnected.
  • The key concepts that underpin the study of geography.

Homework

Activities often include quizzing, research tasks and extended writing.

Assessment

Students are assessed throughout the year through both formative and summative assessments, which vary in style but usually include both quizzing and exam-style questions

Extended Learning

Students have the opportunity to extend their learning through Geography enrichment sessions, fieldwork trips, university visits, guest speaker workshops and events such as 'Earth Day' and 'Climate Change Week'.
